One of the worst nightmares, in which an armed sociopathic individual enters a school or any public place and starts to shoot, not caring whether a child, someone’s father or grandmother fall down lifeless, has, unfortunately, become the reality of the modern civilized world.
How to stop gun violence in school? How to prevent massive shootings at a public place? These and many others related questions remain to be unanswered, hence, in need of urgent resolution for the sake of our families and communities.
What are gun violence and massive shootings?
Gun violence is a term used to describe a violence committed with the use of a gun. When it comes to gun violence, America is considered to be an exceptional country. According to the year 2012 statistic of homicides by firearm, America held first place with the rate of 29.7 deaths per 1 million people.
In fact, there is no specific definition describing the term “massive shooting”. It is common to believe that an incident, in which at least 4 people were both injured or killed, is called a “massive shooting”.
Since December 2012, the year when at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, a gunman, in less than 5 minutes killed 26 people and himself, more than 1300 shootings were committed, having taken lives of more than 1500 innocent people. Another recent, so far the worst massive shooting in US history happened on June 12, 2016, at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, where a single shooter killed 49 people. The statistics are scary; the nation’s mourning is endless, while measures taken to prevent merciless massive murders are vague.
The former President Barack Obama made an attempt in conducting several executive actions aimed at tightening gun control and sponsoring a research program that would figure out the causes of gun violence and find the ways to prevent it. However, his efforts weren’t enough to end gun violence problem and the following years were not less bloody than previous. According to “A visual guide: Mass shooting in America” published on June 21, 2016, by A.J. Willingham, there were 136 mass shootings. Moreover, out of the 30 deadliest shootings, which happened in the USA from the year 1949, 16 occurred in the past 10 years. Among them already the mentioned Sandy Hook shooting in 2012 with 27 killed, Virginia Tech massacre in 2007 (32 killed), Island Regional Center in 2015 (14 killed), the Orlando attack in 2016 (49 killed) and others.
One of the major reasons why gun violence is widely spread on the territory of the USA is drugs and high rates of crime. However, the root of the problem lies in the legal permission to own guns and guns’ accessibility within the USA. The more guns lead to more gun deaths. It is of the utmost importance to ensure our families and communities are safe, ensure firearms are not possessed by people with the unstable nervous system, mentally ill or those prone to committing the crime.
